01/05/2004

Meeting in the SeychellesBetween the 26th - 29th of April, the Regional Coordinators of CORDIO held a meeting in the Seychelles to plan and discuss activities for the next three years.

Discussions concentrated on reviewing projects proposed in CORDIO’s funding application to Sida and were very productive paving the way for CORDIO during the next three years. The meeting was hosted by the Seychelles Centre for Marine Research and Technology/ Marine Parks Authority, who will co-ordinate activities in the Indian Ocean Islands region during the coming three years, and attended by the co-ordinators from each other node in East Africa, South Asia and Sweden. This was the first duty of the new joint CORDIO/IUCN regional co-ordinator for South Asia, Jerker Tamelander, who is joining CORDIO from UNEP where he held a Finnish Junior Professional Officer position. Jerker will be stationed in Colombo where he will co-ordinate both CORDIO’s and IUCN’s marine activities which, in most cases, will be implemented as joint collaborative projects. Jerker will take over responsibility from Dan Wilhelmsson who has moved on to pursue a Ph D in Sweden. CORDIO would like to the thank Dan for establishing a strong network and foundation in South Asia and his hard work during the last five years and wish him well in his future endeavours. In addition, representatives from the IUCN marine programme were present, including the Global Co-ordinator, Carl Gustav Lundin, and Regional Co-ordinator for East Africa, Melita Samoilys, who, together with CORDIO’s co-ordinators, developed several collaborative projects that will be jointly implemented during the coming few years further strengthening the growing links between CORDIO and IUCN.
